Aquatic and terrestrial invertebrate ecology

In addition to my research, I have worked with several local non-profit organizations in Pennsylvania, Georgia, and California in the use of invertebrates for water quality monitoring in streams. These organizations help local water authorities to incorporate biomonitoring into water quality objectives.

As an ecosystem ecologist and entomologist, I especially enjoy studying the interactions between invertebrates, plants, and microorganisms (fungi, bacteria) in aquatic detrital food webs and soils, and the resulting effects on organic matter processing and carbon and nutrient cycling. Recently I have also been studying the factors affecting soil invertebrate community structure in urban green spaces.
